Generally, immigrants play a significant role in the changing labour force in Canada. They currently make up a larger share of the workforce than in the past. This is especially true in the core working group aged 25-54.
Canada’s new immigrants are also now more educated than the previous cohorts. As a result, they tend to have a lower unemployment rate than before.
Canada Immigration Express noted that over the past five years, Canada’s workforce is now more educated, skilled and racially diverse. The employment of more immigrants in Canada has resulted in substantial growth in the country. For instance, there is a tremendous increase in the number of university graduates in Canada. The number of people in professional white-collar jobs in Canada has also risen.
Reasons for More Educated People in Canada
From reports, Canadians became more educated between 2016 and 2021. In 2021, about 33% of working-aged people had a Bachelor’s Degree or higher. This record is said to be higher by 4.3% compared with the record of the 2016 census.
Canada Immigration Express added that recent immigrants make up almost half the growth in the share of Canadians with a Bachelor’s Degree or higher.
According to Professor Mikal Skuterud, a labour economist at the University of Waterloo, the new trend observed in the latest census is directly a result of the reforms done to the Canadian immigration system back in 2015. Many other economists believe that Canadians became more educated due to the reforms.
Reforms to the Immigration System in 2015
More people living in Canada in recent times have higher education due to the creation of the Express Entry system. This immigration system began to prioritize potential permanent residents based on their post-secondary education level. It also considered their language proficiency and years of Canadian work experience.
